The Icelandic Maritime Officers´Association was founded in January 2004 by merging older unions, tracing roots back to 1893. It currently has around 800 members, open to educated ship officers.

The association is a trade union, which takes care of members interests, rights, education, safety and professional status. Its’ role is among other to negotiate collective bargaining agreements for captains and officers across fishing vessels, cargo ships, pilots, coast guard vessels/aircraft, research ships, dredgers, and ferries.

It publishes the quarterly magazine Víkingur, covering fisheries and association news.
