RationFEED turns wasted pellets into feeding intelligence.
Icelandic aquaculture technology company Ration has developed RationFEED, an out-of-water computer-vision system that detects and counts uneaten feed pellets in the effluent from land-based fish tanks. The data can be used to automatically adjust feeding in real-time, helping farms reduce feed loss, protect water quality, and respond more accurately to changes in fish appetite.
Mounted above the tank effluent, RationFEED combines specialized optics, AI, and computer vision to distinguish pellets from fish waste. The system can connect to existing feeding equipment and control it automatically. Feeding information and autopilot controls are available for feeding operators through RationFEED’s web-based interface.
Designed for the realities of land-based farming
Keeping the camera outside the water is a central feature of the system. Submerged cameras can be affected by fouling, corrosion, dirty lenses, and poor visibility. Since the camera is not submerged in the tank or outflow pipe, it does not interfere with water flow or the removal of dead fish, while enabling automatic self-cleaning.
The specialised optics are particularly important. Feed pellets can be difficult to distinguish from other brown organic material in the effluent under ordinary lighting. Under RationFEED’s illumination, the pellets become visually distinct, allowing the software to identify them even in fast and turbulent flows. The patented combination of lighting, optical filtering, image analysis, and flexible installation options is one of RationFEED’s main technical differentiators.
Recognition from the industry
Following development and testing from 2023 to 2025, RationFEED has now moved into commercial operation at sites in Iceland and Norway. The technology has been integrated directly with feeding systems in production tanks, enabling continuous monitoring and automatic control.
Ration offers the system through a monthly rental model, which includes a three-month trial, ongoing software improvements, and technical support.
“It counts uneaten feed pellets as they are exiting the effluent pipe and uses that information to control feeding for optimal fish growth, feed efficiency, and water quality,” says David Jarron, Sales and Service Manager of Ration.
In 2026, Ration was selected as one of eight finalists for the Seafood Innovation Award at the North Atlantic Seafood Forum, recognising the company’s work to turn a previously overlooked waste stream into practical production intelligence.
Ration will be exhibiting on stand C10.
