The Icelandic Maritime Officers’ Association will be exhibiting at IceFish in September.
The Association has long been a supporter of IceFish, but this year will have a presence on stand E10 where they will welcome members and offer valuable information on the Association’s work.
The Icelandic Maritime Officers' Association was founded in January 2004 by a merger of shipmasters' unions. It is a trade union, looking after members and their rights, education, safety and professional status.
Its main task is to protect the interests of members, with employers, the government and other stakeholders.
It offers a broad range of services including:
Wage issues and rights protection
It negotiates collective agreements for members on all Icelandic ships, monitors the implementation of the collective agreements, provides members with assistance regarding wage disputes, sick leave entitlements, dismissals and other rights issues and represents members in disputes with shipping companies or public bodies.
Professional interests protection
The Association protects and promotes the working conditions of shipowners, monitors changes in laws and regulations concerning seafaring, fishing and navigation, provides comments on laws and regulations affecting the profession and participates in consultations with governments, institutions and the business community.
Education and professional qualifications
Recognising the value of professional development it promotes good education for shipmasters, monitors the development of studies and professional qualifications, supports the retraining and lifelong learning of members and protects the professional rights and qualification requirements of shipmasters.
Safety and occupational health and safety issues
Acknowledging that the industry is a competitive and often dangerous environment the Association is working towards increased safety for seafarers. It monitors the facilities and working conditions on board and expresses the views of members on maritime safety and fisheries management.
Social and health fund issues
An important aspect of the Association’s work is the operation of the health fund and subsidy systems according to its Articles of Association. It provides grants for illness, rehabilitation, education or other projects according to the rules of the funds. It also promotes the welfare of members and their families.
National and international cooperation
The Association cooperates with other seafarers' associations in Iceland, international seafarers' associations and unions and follows-up on international agreements affecting seafarers.
Information and publishing activities
Communication is key to the Association’s work, and it disseminates information to members on wage issues and rights, publishes newsletters, reports and professional material, promotes discussion on issues of the fisheries industry and seafarers and publishes or participates in the publication of the magazine Víkingur.
Advocacy of the fisheries industry and shipowners
The Association presents the views of shipowners in discussions on fisheries management, resource issues and safety issues, protecting the independence and professional role of shipowners.
It keeps the profession at the forefront of discussions by highlighting the importance of the profession to the national economy and the country's settlements.
The Association also offers a highly enjoyable benefit; it owns and operates apartments and summer houses which are for the use of members.
